Our Favorite Fine Jewelry Designers In 2016

Dev Valencia earringsFavorite Jewelry Designers

Who are the best fine jewelry designers in modern time? It’s hard to say, as many of the iconic brands we all know and love – Dior, Tiffany, Chanel, Bugatti – were started by designers many years ago and have taken on a life of their own.

There are, however, a few fine jewelry designers still living and blazing trails that inspire us.

David and Sybil Yurman

David and Sybil Yurman founded their New York jewelry company in 1980. With a background in modern sculptural design and painting, David brings a unique aesthetic and timelessness to his jewelry pieces. They are best known for popularizing cable bracelets made of wrapped silver, platinum or gold and adorned with accents. Supermodels like Gisele Bündchen and Kate Moss have come to embody the spirit of the brand. Celebrities like Tina Fey, Jennifer Garner and Jessica Lange love the architectural, sculptural carvings in David and Sybil’s bracelets, but they also have stunning cuffs, necklaces, watches and other jewelry pieces designed to transition from everyday to evening formal wear. The American Gem Society awarded the pair their coveted Lifetime Achievement Award for their contributions to the fine jewelry community.

Dev Valencia

Dev Valencia has been described as “a paradise for every woman who embraces modernity, but does not want to break away from ethnicity and elegance.” Dev Valencia has been one of New York’s foremost design houses over the past 30 years, embodying both simplicity and class. Black rhodium plating and hand-texturing are a few qualities you may find in her work that sets these pieces apart from the masses. From slim, elegant wedding bands to pendants that “wow” with sapphires and diamonds, her collections make ideal special occasion wear and distinctive gifts. You may have seen one of her pieces given to a lucky prize winner on the gameshow “The Price Is Right.”

Yves Spinelli

LA jewelry designer Yves Spinelli launched the Spinelli Kilcollin brand in 2010. Since then, it’s been picked up by 50 luxury boutiques around the world, including Barneys, Harrod’s and Montaigne Market. As store manager of Maxfield Bleu from 2005 – 2009, Yves worked with some of the best designers in the world who inspired his clean, architectural jewelry style. His linked stacker rings of varying thicknesses and designs (“galaxy rings”) could be worn spread across three fingers or all piled on one finger. He made a custom linked ring for high-end fashionista Ikram Goldman with 5 carats of diamonds that drew the attention of national press. Since then, he has been featured in Glamour, Marie Claire, Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitan, and other noted publications.

India Hicks

India Hicks is the descendent of British royalty — the Earl and Countess Mountbatten of Burma and the last Viceroy of India. She brings a regal quality to her jewelry, but her style is also very much influenced by her interior designer father’s love of geometric patterns and her current coastal life in the Bahamas. Her design company is new as of 2015, but it’s already picked up attention from Haute Living, The LA Times, ABC News and Elle. The fine, free-spirited jewelry pieces are designed with the “mom-preneur” in mind. Some of her most popular collections include token-style pendants with inspirational sayings, thick cuff bracelets, interlocking love letter charm necklaces, and simple island motif earrings.
