What’s hot in jewelry: Spring 2018
“Transparency” is the new buzz word today, showing up in news feeds everywhere in regards to Internet privacy, politics, and corporate culture. However, the word has now taken center stage on the fashion runways, too. “Total transparency” is one of three predominant themes for spring 2018’s jewelry; another opts to dive deep in our psyches, conjuring up memories of bygone days spent at the seashore. A third capitalizes on the fervor surrounding the upcoming Royal Wedding – with every girl secretly wishing she could find her Prince Charming as well.
A ‘60s Flashback?
The transparency trend appears to follow the lead from earlier style movements involving clear accessories, including see-through boots and translucent plastic handbags from such top designers as Helmut Lang and Celine.
It’s a Lucite lineup this season — hoop earrings, heavy bangles, and boxy rings suggest a playful, cutting-up mood verging on costume. The shapes are softened somewhat using spring-y colors like pale pink, grassy green and butter yellow. Designers like Rachel Comey and Prenza Schouler have embraced the fashion statement.
She Sells Seashells
The nostalgia continues with the comeback of seashell necklaces, once a must-have ’90s vacation souvenir. Now they are all the rage again for spring, with none other than Prada leading the way. The brand’s models waltzed down last fall’s runway sporting huge, mismatched shell necklaces and bracelets in several different colors and textures.
The timing of this trend is auspicious, as we are perfecting the art of multilayering, or wearing two or three necklaces at a time. Designers Pandora Sykes and Leandra Medine are championing the look, sporting gold hoop earrings with embellished shell chokers.
Princess Bride
Inspired by the nearing nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, some of the most feminine jewelry styles for spring mimic princess-like tiaras, using innovative bejeweled hairpins, barrettes, combs, and crowns, often paired with complementary earrings. If you need inspiration, check out London’s Simone Rocha’s treatment of rhinestone hair pieces.
However, you can also rock this trend with jewelry you already own or plan to purchase for your collection. Consider making a statement with a necklace in your hair, or attach two vintage bling ear clips to a velvet headband for a glamorous go-to look.
