2016 Awards for Jewelry & Watch Design
Temple St. Clair was among several jewelry designers recognized for their exemplary work at this year’s prestigious GEM Awards, held in New York City. Hosted by the Jewelers of America (JA), the gala honors the accomplishments of individuals and companies whose efforts raise the visibility of fine jewelry and watches.
Some of the industry’s most recognized names, including Pamela Love, Stephen Webster and David Yurman attended the 14th annual GEM Awards on January 8. The remarkable evening, which offered glimpses of incredible jewelry and timepieces, was covered by Couture, iW Magazine and other notable outlets.

Often dubbed the “Academy Awards of Fine Jewelry,” the GEM Awards pay tribute to artistry, creativity and style and are considered one of the highest accolades in the jewelry industry.
Nominees are selected for varying categories including Watch and Jewelry Design, and Media Excellence.
The 2016 GEM award winners include:
- Temple St. Clair – took home the highly coveted award for Jewelry Design. Her signature collection is renowned for its use of iconic crystal amulets. Founded some 30 years ago in Florence, Italy, her company has gained traction worldwide. In 1986, Barneys New York began incorporating Temple St. Clair pieces in its fine jewelry department.
- Cartier – this prominent design house took home the newly created award for Watch Design. Synonymous with beauty, excellence and a unique flair, Cartier has pioneered new ground in the arena of timepieces that embrace universal style. Cartier beat out fellow nominees Piaget and Roger Dubuis for this honor.
- Joe Thompson, who is Editor-in-Chief of WatchTime Magazine, won the GEM Lifetime Achievement Award for his decades-long career that has elevated the watch industry. Widely regarded as one of the most well-informed watch reporters, Thompson has garnered nine editorial excellence awards from the American Business Press over the years.
- Rob Bates, News Director of JCK magazine, received the award for Media Excellence. For more than two decades, Bates’ writing on fine jewelry and diamonds has been featured high-profile outlets like the Chicago Tribune and The New York Times. Bates is also the founder of his own award-winning blog that contains detailed articles on the diamond industry.
