What is Bohemian style?

Bohemian style dates back more than 200 years. Today we associate “Boho” with artists, hippies, free spirits, and intellectuals. Flowing, colorful clothing, threadbare fabrics, and long hair are hallmarks of this “gypsy-like” counterculture originating from post-revolution France.

Without the patronage system to support their craft, many artists became nomadic vagabonds, living cheaply in unfashionable clothes. In many ways, they lived the gypsy lifestyle and made do with what they had. The artist “style” was simply a pastiche of all the different places they visited and the goods they acquired.

As the Romantic Movement took hold in the late 18th century, artists were once again exalted. The eccentric manner of dress was seen as an expression of genius. One could consider the Bohemian style to be a backlash of the restrictive Victorian Era clothing of the rich and pampered – the high-button collars, the corsets, the stiff and heavy materials.

Over time, the Bohemian style evolved to become a “work of art” in its own right. Layering, flowers and paisley patterns, nontraditional matching, ruffles, lace, loose fabrics and broad-brimmed hats became hallmarks of the style. The 1970s was a golden era for Bohemian style, as demonstrated by famous personalities like Janis Joplin, Cher, and Stevie Nicks.

Modern examples of Bohemian style can be seen in the attire of people like Mary-Kate Olsen, Vanessa Hudgens, Sienna Miller, Kate Moss, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Elements of Boho jewelry

From a jewelry design standpoint, Boho has never been hotter. Elements include:

  • Multiple strands of necklaces at varying lengths
  • Colorful chunky beaded necklaces and bracelets
  • Large hoop and dangle earrings
  • Mismatched jewelry
  • Handcrafted jewelry
  • Wood and metal bangle bracelets (layered)
  • Semi-precious stones
  • Oversized rings

Going Boho with your jewelry is easy — just think: layering, textured, chunky, tribal, mismatch.
